# AI-Guided Onboarding

> Walk through PlaneConnection's 5-phase AI onboarding experience that sets up your SMS program, safety team, and performance indicators.

By the end of this tutorial, you will have completed the five-phase AI onboarding -- with aircraft in your fleet, your safety team designated, 22 Part 5 compliance documents generated, 40 safety performance indicators configured, and a guided tour of the platform complete.

<Info>
  **Who should do this tutorial?** New workspace administrators setting up PlaneConnection for the
  first time. The onboarding flow appears automatically after workspace creation.
</Info>

## Before you start

You will need a freshly created PlaneConnection workspace. The onboarding screen appears automatically after workspace creation. If you skipped it previously, navigate to **Settings > Re-run Onboarding** to start again.

<Note>
  **Estimated time:** 15--30 minutes. Your progress is saved automatically, so you can leave and
  return at any time.
</Note>

<Steps>
  ### Step 1: Orient yourself on the onboarding screen

  The onboarding screen has three zones: a **progress stepper** across the top showing your current phase, an **ALI chat panel** on the left where the conversation happens, and a **live preview canvas** on the right that updates in real time as you provide information.

  You should see Phase 1 highlighted in the progress stepper.

  ### Step 2: Complete the Operation Profile

  ALI asks about your fleet, bases, and operation type. Answer the questions in the chat panel -- you can type naturally or use the suggested reply chips.

  Provide your aircraft types (e.g., Citation XLS, King Air 350), base locations (e.g., KTEB, KSDL), operation type, FAA certificate number, and crew count.

  You should see aircraft cards appearing on the live preview canvas on the right as you provide fleet information.

  When this phase completes, your aircraft records, base airports, and operation profile are saved to your workspace.

  ### Step 3: Designate your Safety Team

  ALI asks you to identify five key personnel: Accountable Executive, Safety Manager, Director of Operations, Director of Maintenance, and Chief Pilot. For each person, provide their name, title, and email.

  You should see the organizational chart updating on the preview canvas as you enter each person.

  <Note>
    If one person holds multiple safety roles (common in smaller operations), ALI accepts the same
    name for more than one position.
  </Note>

  When this phase completes, personnel records, your organizational safety structure chart, and Safety Review Board membership are created.

  ### Step 4: Generate your SMS Program documents

  ALI asks you to confirm that you are ready, then generates **22 Part 5 compliance documents** customized with your organization name, personnel, and certificate information. These include your Safety Policy Statement, SMS Manual, Emergency Response Plan, investigation and CPA procedures, and more.

  You should see a progress bar as documents are generated. This may take 30--60 seconds.

  When complete, all 22 documents appear as drafts in **Safety > Documents**. You can review, customize, and approve them at your own pace.

  <Note>
    For the complete list of all 22 generated documents, see the [Manage Documents
    guide](/en/how-to/sms/manage-documents).
  </Note>

  ### Step 5: Configure Safety Performance indicators

  ALI configures **40 Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs)** with targets sized for your operation. These cover Flight Operations, Maintenance, Ground Operations, SMS Effectiveness, and Human Factors.

  You should see the SPI dashboard preview populate with your configured indicators and targets.

  For the complete list of SPIs with definitions, units, targets, and alert thresholds, see [SPI Definitions](/en/reference/spi-definitions).

  ### Step 6: Take the Platform Tour

  ALI walks you through the key areas of the platform: safety reports, investigations, CPAs, compliance tracking, the risk matrix, and your generated documents.

  After this phase, onboarding is complete. You are taken to your workspace dashboard with your SMS fully configured.
</Steps>

<Note>
  Everything you configured during onboarding can be updated later from its respective settings page. Fleet information is in **Settings > Fleet**, safety team personnel in **Settings > Organization > Role Designations**, and documents in **Safety > Documents**.
